websites for additional information on autism

There are numerous websites with  information related to autism on the Internet.  We have included websites that have a proven history in providing acurate and pertinent information.

National Autism Center- National Standards Project
As its first major initiative, the National Autism Center spearheaded the National Standards Project, an unprecedented effort to produce a set of standards for effective, research-validated education and behavioral intervention for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Austism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Guidelines for Effective Intervention provides guidelines for effective interventions, best practices, conference presentations by experts in the field, and links to national centers.

The Center for the Study of Autism (CSA) is located in the Salem/Portland, Oregon area. The Center provides information about autism to parents and professionals, and conducts research on the efficacy of various therapeutic interventions. Much of our research is in collaboration with the Autism Research Institute in San Diego, California.

The purpose of the Autism-PDD Resources Network site is to guide you to the key issues associated with autism spectrum disorders. There is a growing awareness of the nature of autism and the kinds of approaches to diagnosis, treatment and care that are likely to be effective in meeting the needs of autistic individuals and their families.

The Autism Society of America was founded in 1965 by a small group of parents working on a volunteer basis out of their homes. Over the last 35 years, the Society has developed into the leading source of information and referral on autism. Today, over 20,000 members are connected through a working network of over 200 chapters in nearly every state.

The mission of the United Autism Alliance (formerly the Autism Society of LA) is to ensure that all individuals with autism spectrum disorders live a life of self-fulfillment and self-determination – living and playing as integrated and respected members of society.

Cure Autism Now is an organization of parents, physicians, and researchers, dedicated to promoting and funding research with direct clinical implications for treatment and a cure for autism.

The National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) works in a variety of areas and Autsim is one of them. It seeks to promote optimal fetal, infant, and child development; prevent birth defects and childhood developmental disabilities; and enhance the quality of life and prevent secondary conditions among children, adolescents, and adults who are living with a disability.

Families for Early Autism Treatment, Inc. (FEAT) is a non-profit organization of parents and professionals, designed to help families with children who have received the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), or Asperger’s Syndrome. It offers a network of support where families can meet each other and discuss issues surrounding autism and treatment options.

Online Asperger's Syndrome information and support can be found at O.A.S.I.S.

Future Horizons is the leading publisher in the world of materials on autism/Asperger's primarily. They also have materials on other developmental disabilities.

The Autism-Asperger's Digest magazine is the premier source of information for parents and professionals on Autism, Asperger's and PDD. Featuring original articles and material from sources around the world, each 52-page issue covers the latest people, products, research, news & viewpoints emerging in the autism field. The HRC Resource Center subscribes to this magazine for your use.

Asperger’s Syndrome is a newly recognized neurological disorder. It shares many of the same characteristics of autism, although people with Asperger’s Syndrome do not have the accompanying disabilities. Those afflicted with this syndrome have difficulty understanding what those around them think and feel. The Families of Adults Afflicted with Asperger’s Syndrome is an excellent source for information and support.
