recent changes to the individuals with disabilities education act (idea) and related information.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the federal law that governs how children with disabilities are educated.  This law was originally passed in 1975 (as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act) and was last amended in 2004.  The most recent amendments contain provisions that will affect regional center clients – some modestly and some more significantly.

Changes to IDEA became effective as of July 1, 2005. Implementing regulations were released by the U.S Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs in August, 2006. States may choose to implement policies and procedures that vary somewhat from IDEA’s “minimum requirements.”  (They may add to, but not do less than, the minimum requirements.)
